Frequently Asked Questions
Can current 8th graders audition into 10th grade band as a 9th grader?
Yes. There will be auditions in the Spring for 8th graders wanting to jump to 10th grade band next year. The audition materials will be delivered to the RAMS and Parkview band directors and the auditions will be held at the end of March. If you would like to start preparing now, learn your major scales!
The first part of the audition will be selected major scales, followed by a concert B-flat, one octave, chromatic scale. Talk to your director or contact Mr. McKnight with questions.
The second part of the audition will be a prepared etude. Percussionists will play a mallet etude and a snare etude.

What are lessons like in 9th grade?
In 9th grade you are pulled from band rehearsal for your lessons, so you won't miss any other curricular class time. That means it's impossible to forget your lesson! While Mr. Dehnel is directing the band, Mr. McKnight simply comes to get you out of rehearsal for your lesson.
Do 9th graders play in Pep Band
No. We have three Pep Bands that are made up of 10-12th grade band students.
What is the band schedule?
Band meets every day of the week, just like any other class. This makes for noticeable improvement in the playing of the band and huge social benefits.
Does band meet all year?
Yes. In order to maintain consistency of instrumentation and the flow of the curriculum, it is necessary that everyone registers for the full year of band.
Can I do both band and choir?
Yes. There is a share program in 9th grade where students can take both band and choir for just one credit per trimester. Band and choir both meet during 5th hour. Every third day, share students simply go to choir instead of band.
Is there a band trip?
Yes. If you stay in band until your senior year, you will be in Symphonic Band. Symphonic Band takes a trip every year. It is optional, but most students go on the trip. Previous destinations have included: New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, Washington D.C., and more!
